Health Research Fellowships - Round Two

The Health Research Fellowships provide funding of up to $150,000 pa for five years as salary support which will allow health districts to back-fill the clinical time of practicing clinicians or other health professionals to undertake clinical or health service research. Successful applicants will undertake research that has the potential to lead to improved patient care in Queensland by influencing health policy and clinical practice.  Please note the changes in eligibility criteria to this fellowship from previous rounds.

Grants for Research into Motor Neurone Disease in 2011 - Closing date: Friday, 27 August 2010

Researchers working in Australia in fields that are relevant to motor neurone disease are invited to apply for funding to support research in the calendar year 2011.  In general, the proposal should be consistent with the standards of the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC).  Funding decisions will be made by the Institute’s Research Committee in October 2010.

Research grants allocated are mostly grants-in-aid and postdoctoral fellowships.   A PhD Scholarship  commencing 2011 will be offered in partnership with NHMRC.

Grants-in-aid for research into motor neurone disease in 2011

The MND Research Institute of Australia regards its role as one of providing seed-funding for research that is innovative and having a clear relationship to the causes, treatments and cures of MND or the support of people living with MND.  Accordingly, the majority of funds available through the Institute are for grants-in-aid of MND research in Australia.

 Some of the grants-in-aid are awarded as named grants with funding provided by sponsors.  Some of these grants have special conditions:

  1. Charles & Shirley Graham MND Research Grant for scientific research relevant to the cause, treatment or cure of motor neurone disease.
  2. Mick Rodger Benalla MND Research Grant for research into cause, treatment or cure of MND in basic or applied science.  Part of the funding must be used to attend the International Symposium on ALS/MND in Sydney, Australia, 30 November - 2 December 2011.
  3. MND Victoria Research Grant for applied research into MND, including social research.  Part of the funding must be used to attend the International Symposium on ALS/MND in Sydney, Australia, 30 November - 2 December 2011.
  4. Peter Stearne Grant for Familial MND Research for a project investigating the genes responsible for familial MND.
  5. Roth Foundation Grant for MND Research for scientific research relevant to the cause, treatment or cure of motor neurone disease.
  6. Zo-eè MND Research Grant  for research into cause, treatment or cure of MND in basic or applied science.  Part of the funding must be used to attend the International Symposium on ALS/MND in Sydney, Australia, 30 November - 2 December 2011.

Applications for grants-in-aid up to a maximum value of $100,000 will be considered.   Fourteen grants-in-aid were awarded for 2010 with an average value of about $32,500.
 

Bill Gole MND Postdoctoral Fellowship (2011 - 2013)
The Fellowships of the MND Research Institute of Australia aim to encourage young researchers to focus their interest on MND.  The Bill Gole MND Postdoctoral Fellowship is directed towards postdoctoral scientists with a track record in areas of neuroscience related to motor neurone disease.  Salary for a full-time research fellow will be funded at $72,500 p.a. for a period of up to three years.

PhD Scholarship
One postgraduate PhD scholarship (3 years) will be offered commencing in January 2011.
The NHMRC / MNDRIA  PhD Scholarship for biomedical or public health research in motor neurone disease is offered through the NHMRC and will be funded jointly by the MND Research Institute of Australia and NHMRC.  Application must be made through  NHMRC, closing date 30 July 2010.

Clinical Academic Fellowships - Round Two
 
Funding of up to $75,000 pa for five years towards the salary of a new clinical academic position
Please note that individual researchers are not eligible to apply for this fellowship. The application process for the Clinical Academic Fellowship requires the collaboration of Queensland Government funded health care facilities and universities (“joint applicants”) to design new positions that will increase research activity and provide a focus on clinical excellence.

The Royal Australasian College of  Physicians - Jacquot Awards - closing date 30 August 2010.   These are grants for Nephrology research.  The Royal Australasian College of  Physicians offers upward of 50 awards each year.  The Fellowships and scholarships provided by the Research and Education Foundation are available only to Fellows and Advanced Trainees of The Royal Australasian College of Physicians and its Faculties and Chapters. The majority of awards are designed for Fellows or Advanced Trainees at an early stage of their careers and strong preference will be given to these applicants. Several awards are, however, available to more established researchers.

There are over 40 Fellowships available within the following categories, although not all are offered each year:
