"Thank You” Day 4BH Outdoor Radio Broadcast and Sausage Sizzle
South Bank Forecourt, Brisbane, QLD – Wednesday 26 November 2008 
 

As part of Research Australia’s “Thank You” Day, Mater Medical Research
Institute partnered with 4BH radio to host a morning outdoor broadcast at
South Bank Forecourt Brisbane. 4BH morning show reaches an audience of
32,000 listeners. The broadcast provided an opportunity to say “Thank You”
 to medical researchers for their hard work and dedication and to acknowledge
 the achievements made throughout the medical research community. The
talented and high profile 4BH breakfast team, Moyd Kay and Loretta Ryan
interviewed Rebecca James, CEO Research Australia who spoke on “Thank
You” Day followed by Sonia Hancock, MMRI clinical nurse, Mary Lakley an
ovarian cancer survivor who shared her personal experience and also proactively
raises money for medical research.Other interviewees included a spokesperson
from John Holland who are corporate supporters of MMRI, Professor Mike
McGuckin a leading scientist from MMRI and Malcolm Snow, CEO of South
Bank Company. The event included a free breakfast sausage sizzle, give-aways,
prizes and over 500 “Thank You” Day postcards were distributed to the community.

Griffith Health: Surfers to Sydney Launch and “Thank You” Day Celebrations
The Deck, Gold Coast Campus, Griffith University QLD– Monday, 24 November 2008

This event launched the ‘Surfers to Sydney’ bike ride to raise awareness for Cystic
Fibrosis. Griffith University’s Physiotherapy & Exercise Science students set about
on this program to improve awareness of cystic fibrosis and raise over $50,000 for
Cystic Fibrosis Australia.Professor Allan Cripps, Pro Vice Chancellor, Griffith Health
welcomed and acknowledged Griffith Health’s ongoing involvement in “Thank You”
 Day as well as the achievements of health and medical research at the University. David
Pullar, Manager, Partnerships and Policy, Research Australia gave an overview of “Thank
You” Day and presented Research Australia’s National Youth Ambassador winner,
Francesca Dudas from the Sunshine Coast Grammer School, with the her prize of a
Toshiba Protégé M700 Tablet Notebook. Sommer Tuson, ‘Surfers to Sydney’
spokesperson then spoke on raising awareness and funding for Cystic Fibrosis Research. Approximately 50 attendees were present and all enjoyed sending their messages of thanks to health and medical researchers by signing the “Thank You” Day posters before sending off the bike riders on their journey to Sydney.

NSW partners and supporters of MS Research Australia were invited to a morning tea event. Leading researcher Professor Graeme Stewart AM, Director of the Institute for Immunology and Allergy Research, Millennium Institute, Westmead Hospital presented on the topic of MS research, particularly in genetics, and how Australia is playing a key role in a worldwide effort to solve this disease. Attendees had the opportunity to meet with musician Jim Conway, who is the Patron of the MSRA Research Partners program. Jim has been a personality on the Australian music scene for the last 35 years. He is dedicated and passionate about supporting MS research.

Cystic Fibrosis Australia Supporters Event and “Thank You” Day Celebrations

60 guests attended a dinner organised by Cystic Fibrosis Australia to honour L.J. Hooker for their 10 year partnership and sponsorship of the organisation. L.J. Hooker won the Leadership in Corporate Giving “Thank You” Day Award in 2006. Terry Stewart, Chief Executive Officer, Cystic Fibrosis Australia spoke on “Thank You” Day and guests were encouraged to send messages of thanks to health and medical researchers with the “Thank You” Day postcards.

JDRF International Research Dinner is a component of JDRF’s Kids In the House campaign. “Thank You” Day Postcards encouraging members to send their messages of thanks were included in satchels presented to the 120 attendees from the Government and the Health and Medical Research Industry.

In celebration of winning the “Thank You” Day Leadership in Corporate Giving Award for 2008, Pfizer Australia hosted a large BBQ for 300 staff at their West Ryde offices. Teaser posters were placed strategically around the Pfizer offices in lead up to the award announcement and then more posters announced the award win. Pfizer also announced winning the award to the Pfizer community in a special edition of the weekly e-newsletter, Pfizer Pfacts that is distributed to 1700 Pfizer colleagues across Australia. Also an article was published in Pfizer World, Pfizer’s global e – newsletter, which is distributed to more than 85,000 colleagues in more than 150 countries.

Partners and supporters of MS Research Australia attended the MSRA Partners Presentation and “Thank You” Day Celebrations. The event highlighted how investing in Multiple Sclerosis Research Australia is making a real difference to combating the disease. Presentations included leading researcher Professor Trevor Kilpatrick, Head of Neurosciences, University of Melbourne, Rebecca James, CEO, Research Australia who highlighted the importance of “Thank You” Day campaign and attendees had the opportunity to meet with Jennifer Sabo, MS Research Scholar, Howard Florey Institute, Wayne Cross, Victorian MS Ambassador, Lina Marrocco, Head of ‘Charity works for MS’ and Executive Director of MS Research Australia, Jeremy Wright. The special guest for the celebration was Gold Olympic medallist Betty Cuthbert.

VNI Fellows Offer Inspiration to Emerging Young Researchers and "Thank You" Day Celebrations
Four recipients of the Victorian Neurotrauma Initiative (VNI) 2008 Fellowship Awards offered inspiration to emerging young researchers during November as part of VNI’s “Thank You” Day events. The VNI Fellowship recipients opened the doors to their specific research areas to some of Research Australia’s National Youth Ambassadors who are all interested in future careers in health and medical research.

Dr Jerome Maller of the Alfred Psychiatry Research Centre hosted Rachael Heveren, a Year 11 student from St Mary’s College in Seymour and co-winner of the National Youth Ambassador Program 2007. Rachel was guided through Dr Maller’s research environment where he investigates depression in brain injured patients using advanced imaging techniques.

Institute of Breathing and Sleep, Austin Hospital, VIC – Tuesday, 18 November 2008
Dr David Berlowitz of the Institute for Breathing and Sleep hosted Johnson Ja, a Year 10 student from Melbourne High School in South Yarra and give him an overview of the clinical research environment where David investigates how to improve sleep problems in individuals with spinal cord injuries.

Epworth Hospital, VIC – Thursday, 27 November 2008
Dr Gavin Williams of the Epworth hospital hosted Madeleine Barrow, a Year 10 student from The Mac.Robertson Girls’ High School in Melbourne and Research Australia National Youth Ambassador runner up. Dr Williams gave Madeleine an applied introduction to his clinical research involving an innovative gait analysis technique for brain injured patients.

Royal Children’s Hospital and Murdoch Children’s Research Institute, VIC – Friday, 28 November 2008 
Ms Jane Galvin of the Royal Children’s Hospital and the Murdoch Childrens Research Institute hosted Hannah Layman, a Year 11 student from University High School in Parkville and last year’s co-winner of the Research Australia’s National Youth Ambassador Program 2007. Hannah received an overview of Jane’s research into fine and upper limb movement with paediatric brain injured patients.
